Important Upgrade for AVG Free Anti-Virus by Grisoft
PLEASE NOTE:
Several members have written in to inform us that AVG 7.5 will no longer be supported after the end of
this month. The good news is that AVG 8 is now available. Be aware that if you don't upgrade to
AVG Version 8 (now available), you will no longer be protected from new viruses or any other bugs
that may be lurking around. Download AVG Free 8.0 here:

Backup your Mac, Effortlessly
Imagine a Wi-Fi base station, of the sort that turns your home into a wireless hot spot, with a huge
hard drive inside (and, mercifully, no power brick--just a slender power cable). The Time Machine
automatic backup feature of the latest Mac OS X version backs up your Macs onto the Time Capsule,
automatically, constantly, completely and wirelessly. And in my book, automatic, constant, complete
backups are the only kind that really countbook, automatic, constant, complete backups are the only
kind that really count. Read more of David Pogue's review at:

Learn More About Startup Processes
- by George Minot
Do you sometimes wonder what all those startup processes are that waste so much of your time when your PC
is booting up? The simple answer is to use MSCONFIG (Start:Run:msconfig) to check StartUp items,
then perform a Google search on any item you are not sure of. That can be very time-consuming!
Some good sites to check out your boot up processes are:
Uniblue.com - the Uniblue Process Library will tell you the exact purpose of
each process: Top Security Risks, Top System Processes, Top Applications and Other Processes (A-Z).
AnswersThatWork.com - the Task List Programs provides guidance on the
usefulness of background tasks.
Bleepingcomputer.com - the Startup Programs Database provides the rundown on
22,168 start up items.
Processlist.com - get information about any process, program, EXE or DLL file by using the Process Search
Tool.
Also, the WINDOWS DEFENDER application contains a tool called Software Explorer which returns a list of
everything running on your computer and a SPYNET rating.
Articles on the world wide web where you can find out about which Windows services are essential and
which can be eliminated can be accessed from the Windows Management
Console (right click on My Computer and select Manage or the Services Control Panel applet).
Lastly, some of our good HHICC members have suggested to those experiencing a slow start up during
bootup - - Get a MAC!
Change of Windows Plans
- courtesy of Bob Rathke
Microsoft pulled in the reins on two scheduled updates last week. Early updaters found compatibility
problems with both Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP3 and several prominent business software
programs (including Microsoft's own Microsoft Dynamics). Hold off on the update.
Tip of the Week - Unlocker
Delete files that are locked
Unlocker helps delete locked files with error messages like:
- Cannot delete file: Access is denied
- There has been a sharing violation.
- The source or destination file may be in use.
- The file is in use by another program or user.
- Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.
It integrates into the Windows right-click menu, and opens a dialog that shows you the processes that
are currently locking the file, thereby preventing it from being deleted. You can choose to
terminate and unlock the processes, or otherwise delete the file on the next reboot.
