HHICC Statement of Position Regarding HHICC Web Sites 2010
HHICC endeavors to provide club Web sites, currently www.hhicc.org and www.hhiccbb.org,
in a format that is compliant with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards.
These standards evolve and change over time.
Different browsers can and do have significantly different levels of compliance
with these standards. HHICC’s goal is to publish to the Web in a format that is
compatible with mainstream browsers and extensions used by the majority our members.
Mobile devices and tablet computing devices, currently available, deviate significantly
in support of the W3C standards. Also consider that the hardware real-estate of
these devices can be considerably different than the current mainstream Windows
and Mac computers. The screen sizes are typically smaller and resolution is significantly
different than current mainstream Windows and Mac computers. In many cases the content
on existing web pages would have to be broken up into many smaller pages to display
properly, not a trivial amount of work.
It should also be noted that the recently released iPad tablet device has some Apple
published limitations that will prevent proper operation on many web sites. Specifically
the iPad does not support Sun Java or Adobe Flash and Apple has documented this.
This unfortunately will prevent the proper display of many web sites including sections
of the HHICC web. The club uses Microsoft Office Live Calendar website for the club’s
calendar, the limitations of the iPad interfere with viewing this site as expected.
It should be noted that mainstream Mac computers will have no problems viewing the
calendar.
It would be prudent for one to consider their personal requrements when purchasing
a device that is not in the mainstream of computing devices. If having successful
access to all web sites is a requrement then the tablet PC's and Mobile devices
will likely not provide that experience in all cases.
It is not practical or feasible for HHICC to publish web sites in multiple formats,
due to limited volunteer resources. Certainly anyone who might have an interest
in providing HHICC web site access for the browsers that are not “mainstream” are
encouraged to become part of the web site maintenance team and create content for
those devices. Contact anyone of us below for further information.
