Google Mail, Desktop and Maps

This handout is located at http://hhicc.org/google.htm

      1. Google Mail (a.k.a. Gmail)

  • Gmail is a free, search-based webmail service that includes more than 2,000 megabytes (two gigabytes) of storage.   ABOUT GMAIL

  • Gmail help is found at http://gmail.google.com/support/

  • Mail settings demonstration

  •  Sophisticated SPAM filter -- I’ve received virtually no SPAM.

  • Gmail is still in beta testing and is not generally available, except by invitation. Send me email at harveyb@gmail.com for an invitation if you wish to get Gmail.

  • Mostly, I use Gmail as a secondary backup to store important files, or make certain files accessible while away from home.

2.  Google Desktop

  • Find your email, files, media, web history and chats instantly

  • View web pages you've seen, even when you're not online

  • New! Search directly from your desktop with the deskbar

  • Find information at http://desktop.google.com/
  •

    3. Google Maps

    • Google decided to make dynamic, interactive maps that are draggable — no clicking and waiting for graphics to reload each time you want to view the adjacent parts of a map.

    • Recently added Satellite Views

    • Take a tour of Google Maps at http://www.google.com/help/maps/tour/

    • Terrific way to get directions from one point to another.

    • Copy/paste printable maps by using PrintScreen key

    • Re-center maps by double-clicking
